What is Invstr?

Invstr is an investing education app with a self defined mission to, "empower everyone to learn to invest smarter and build a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren." The app was founded by Kerim Derhalli. He was formerly the Global Head of Equity Trading at Deutsche Bank in 2012, but left that job to build Invstr to help aspiring investors learn and grow their skills.

How does Invstr work?

The Invstr app has two primary components. First, the app does serve as an entry level brokerage by offering commission free investing of stocks, and crypto. Secondly, the app focuses on investing education through their Invstr Academy, Fantasy Finance, and education partnerships.

Key Features

Brokerage

Invstr is first and foremost an entry level brokerage. Within the app, you can buy and sell a variety of stocks and crypto all commission free. The interace is very easy to use and place orders on. Fractional shares are available starting at $5. A fractional share is exactly what it sounds like. You can buy just a piece of a stock or crypto if you don't want to buy a complete share. Invstr also offers what they call their portfolio builder which can help you make stock picks best upon your investment style and risk if you are not sure what to invest in.

Learn

Invstr's attention to investing education can be seen in three ways.

1. Invstr Academy: The Invstr academy is an interactive course that has 85 lessons to teach you everything about investing. The course is taught by a variety of financial experts and is broken up into 10 modules so you can consume the content easier. Along the way, you can test your knowledge with a variety of quizes and save key terms and concepts within the glossary section of the course.

2. Fantasy Finance:
Fantasy Finance is exactly what it sounds like. Invstr gives you $1 million in virtual funds so you can learn to invest in real market conditions, without losing real money. Additionally, this feature is a social educational feature. You can invite your friends, compete for real prizes, climb the leaderboard, and more.

3. Partnerships: Finally, Invstr is working on partnering with schools, educators, and investing clubs across America to help bring financial education to the next generation. The app has already partnered with investing club CASH Club and is actively looking to partner with more schools and educators. If you want to bring Invstr to your school, Invstr encourages you to reach out to their support team.

Banking

The Invstr bank accout is nothing to scream and shout about, but does a good job at offering a convenient way to fund your investments. The account is FDIC insured, connects easily with the Invstr brokerage, and comes with a debit card that has a network of 56,000+ ATMs.

Customer Support

Invstr's customer support is light at best. First, Invstr offers their online help center which does do a good job at addressing basic problems. Second, you can reach out to the Invstr support team via email and wait for a reply if you can't find the answer to your problem in the help center.

Advantages

As we have emphasized throughout the review, the primary advantage of Invstr is their focus on investing education. It is hard to find another investing app that gives away a complete interactive investing course for free. We also like the Fantasy Finance feature which makes educational investing social as you can learn and compete with your friends. A bonus advantage is that the brokerage and overall layout of the app is easy to use and navigate as you learn about investing.

Disadvantages

Invstr does have a couple of disadvantages. First, the customer support is very light when compared to other investing apps. The app does not offer any sort of live chat, or phone support, where as other popular investing apps do. Secondly, the app is not a full fleged brokerage. Tradeable assets and account types are both limited. Although this is not really the point of Invstr, it is best to look elsewhere if you truly want a complete brokerage.
